HOW TO WEAR BASICS WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE ONE

Hey Prepsters,

I wanted to create a full-proof guide for wearing essential items, without looking like a basic bitch. So put your PSL’s and UGGS away, and lets get to learning.

Tip 1 | Add a little colour

Basic layering can look a little sad and drab if you stick to a completely monotone look. Start with a pair of coloured jeans, especially in beautiful fall tones like burgundy, camel, or the very trendy ‘moss green’. I will definitely recommend the Paige Denim that I am rocking in a beautiful burgundy tone. These are from their Transcend line, which means they have extra stretch for extra comfort.

Note: If you do try a head to toe black look, be sure to mix in texture, otherwise you will look extra basic.

Tip 2 | Play with textures

I personally love adding different textures to a simple look to jazz it up for laid-back looks. Here, I am wearing a textured shirt from Paige Denim, which also features a little bit of flex. Other alternatives for the fall/winter season include denim shirts, flannels or even woollen shirt jackets. Additionally, I love the popcorn stitching on my sweater, which is also in a beautiful tan hue.

Tip 3 | Accessorize

It should go without saying, but accessorizing a look can completely transform it from slam to bam. Most men that reach out to myself for tips often feel a little hesitant when it comes to rocking jewellery, and I always recommend that they start off with a watch and bracelet, and work your way up from there. Also, wearing prescription frames/sunnies can add a ton of flare to your look. Finally, investing in nice leather bags and accessories can also bring a hint of elegance to any simple look. But also, don’t over do the accessories either. When it comes to accessories, a less is more approach is definitely the way to go.

Tip 4 | Always invest in pretty casual footwear

The most common style mistake I see men make, is that they wear clunky or beat up casual footwear. Invest in sleeker leather tennis shoes for creating a more lux look, sneakers with a slimmer silhouette; like the Chuck II by Converse, or something a little more fun like a bright pair of Nike’s.

Tip 5 | Outerwear can make or break a look

I don’t want to get too into detail about outwear because it’s a force of its own. But ideally, you want to ensure that your casual outerwear still looks fresh. I always recommend getting your winter coats cleaned by a professional at least once a year, or as often as needed.
